What is BMI?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is calculated from weight and height to assess if weight is in a healthy range. Formula: BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². BMI is a simple screening tool but cannot distinguish muscle from fat. Athletes may have high BMI with normal body fat.

Terminology

BMI Body Mass Index

Index relating weight to height, applicable to general adults

BMR Basal Metabolic Rate

Minimum calories needed to maintain life at complete rest

TDEE Total Daily Energy Expenditure

Total calories burned daily including activity

Ideal Weight

Healthy weight range based on height (BMI 18.5-24)

FAQ

Is BMI applicable to everyone?

BMI is for general adults, not suitable for children, pregnant women, athletes, or elderly. These groups need other assessments.

Why do I need to know TDEE?

TDEE is daily calorie needs. Eating below TDEE creates calorie deficit for weight loss; above TDEE for weight gain.

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR is calories burned at complete rest. TDEE adds daily activities and exercise, representing actual daily needs.

Are BMI standards different for Asians?

Yes, Asians may have health risks at lower BMI, so Asian standards are stricter than WHO standards. This tool uses Asian standards.
